Downingtown's Halloween Week Starts With a Homebrew Contest for the Library

October 22, 2026

Every ticket sold for this Saturday's beer tasting at the firehouse on Wallace Avenue goes to the Downingtown Library. The 8th annual D-Town Brew-Down runs from 1 to 5 p.m. on October 24 at Minquas Fire Company No. 2, and the library says all proceeds go to it.

The Brew-Down also starts the borough's whole Halloween stretch. Four groups planned the next eight days on their own calendars: the library, the Growing Roots farmers market, the businesses behind Trick or Treat on Main Street, and the borough. The dates still fit together across those eight days, starting Saturday afternoon.

What the Brew-Down actually is

There's no brewery lineup to scan. The Brew-Down is a homebrew competition. Tasters sample beers made at home, professional judges award cash prizes, and the crowd votes for a People's Choice winner. The Downingtown Library's event page calls the beers "high-quality" and says food will be sold on site by Chick-fil-A Downingtown.

The prizes draw serious entrants. Pollar Brewing, a microbrewery in Mount Joy, says its Nordic Nacht Dunkel took Judges First Place at the 2024 Brew-Down. Pollar's site also lists this year's event, though it calls it the 7th annual. The library, which benefits from the event, counts this year as the 8th. So a contest held in a Downingtown fire hall draws entries from as far as Lancaster County.

Tickets are sold through TicketSignup in three tiers. Prices below include fees:

Ticket Price with fees Status
Taster $36.73 On sale
Non-taster $5.86 On sale
VIP $77.89 Sold out

The VIP tier sold out first. The $5.86 non-taster ticket means a designated driver can come along for less than the cost of a pint.

Why the library runs a beer contest

The library is open about why it needs the money. Its event page describes a library that serves more than 50,000 Chester County residents, with many programs at full capacity, especially the children's programs. It says it needs to add services, programs, staff and physical space. State, county and local funding covers part of that, and the library says it has to raise the rest.

So the money raised at a homebrew contest in a fire hall goes toward the library's crowded programs. This year's sponsors listed on the library page include FMFCU and Minquas, the fire company hosting the event. The library also takes supporting and in-kind sponsorships, and questions go to the volunteers named on its page.

How Saturday fits together

The Brew-Down's 1 p.m. start leaves the morning open for Kerr Park. The Growing Roots farmers market runs at 60 E. Pennsylvania Ave. from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on October 24. When the market closes, the Brew-Down opens across town on Wallace Avenue.

  1. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Farmers market at Kerr Park, 60 E. Pennsylvania Ave.
  2. 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.: D-Town Brew-Down at Minquas Fire Company No. 2, 141 Wallace Ave.

The market's vendors change from week to week. Growing Roots posts each week's producers by Monday morning and sends its newsletter around 8 p.m. Wednesday. By the time you read this, the October 24 lineup should already be up. The mid-October list gives a sense of a fall Saturday here: Barking Dog Farm, Mad Radish Farm, Storm Crow Farm, Sirius Mushrooms, Twice Shy Farm, True North Farmstead and Wyebrook Farm for produce and meat. Enchanted Flour Bake Shop, Molto Bene! Ravioli Co., Vesta Kitchen and Pause Cafe covered prepared food. Seven Stars Sharpening, Wastewell Compost, Tilly Lamaze Ceramics and Honey Rae Soap & Co. filled out the rest. That's a typical week, not a guaranteed lineup for any one date.

A knife dropped off at the sharpening tent in the morning and a jar of mushrooms for dinner make the market a stop worth fitting in before the tasting.

Sunday moves to Main Street

On Sunday the week shifts from the adults' calendar to the kids'. The borough lists Trick or Treat on Main Street from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 25. In 2023, a Macaroni KID listing credited the event to the Downingtown Business Community and described trick-or-treating up and down Lancaster Avenue, with costumes encouraged. This year's borough listing doesn't name an organizer or a route. Check the borough calendar before heading out.

The daytime hours help families with toddlers or early bedtimes. Kids get a full trick-or-treat outing in daylight, six days before the evening one.

October 31 runs on the same pattern

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, so the 31st works like the 24th. The farmers market runs at Kerr Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Borough trick-or-treat runs from 6 to 8 p.m. That leaves the afternoon free. A pumpkin bought at Kerr Park in the morning has time to be carved before the porch lights go on.

Here are the eight days together:

Date Event Time Place
Sat., Oct. 24 Farmers market 9 a.m.–1 p.m. Kerr Park
Sat., Oct. 24 D-Town Brew-Down 1–5 p.m. Minquas Fire Co. No. 2, 141 Wallace Ave.
Sun., Oct. 25 Trick or Treat on Main Street 10 a.m.–1 p.m. Downingtown borough
Sat., Oct. 31 Farmers market 9 a.m.–1 p.m. Kerr Park
Sat., Oct. 31 Borough trick-or-treat 6–8 p.m. Borough-wide

What comes after the 31st

The borough calendar's market listings stop at October 31. In past seasons that hasn't meant the market closes. In 2025, Growing Roots kept the Downingtown market running every Saturday in November and December from 9 a.m. to noon, closing only on November 29 and December 27 for the holidays. The Growing Roots Downingtown page is where the 2026 cold-weather schedule will appear. Its newsletter link currently reads "check back later."

After the market's season, Kerr Park's calendar turns to the borough's holiday events:

  • Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, Saturday, November 28. The borough lists 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Kerr Park. Chester County's tourism listing says activities start at 6 p.m. and Santa lights the tree at 6:45.
  • Log House Santa, Saturday, December 5, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kerr Park.
  • Good Neighbor Christmas Parade, Saturday, December 12, at 3 p.m. Units stage at Beaver Creek Elementary School, 601 W. Pennsylvania Ave. The route runs from Gable Avenue onto Lancaster Avenue and ends at Green Street, according to the 2026 parade rules.

Most of the Halloween week happens outdoors and is gone by November 1. The Brew-Down money keeps working after that, going toward the services, staff and space the Downingtown Library says it needs to add.
